My thoughts on "A Worn Path"
The first thing I noticed after reading " A Worn Path" is Pheonix's strong determination. She is the only person her grandson can rely, she tells the nurse that“We is the only two left in the world,”. She goes on this journey into town in order to get her grandson medicine. The nurse says that the doctor told her to keep giving her the medicine as long as she comes for it. This tells me that the doctor feels bad for but also admires the old woman. The title may be symbolic of Pheonix's life, a constant struggle and battle to get by.

Yes, the struggle is important--see my comments to the "English 40" blog (second from bottom of list on Previous BLogs)--thinking of the journey as a "quest," in her mind--actually an imaginative one--would help. Check quest myths in Wikipedia, etc....for a definition; you may also check your glossary terms posted to Blackboard
ReplyDeleteThe story was kind of racial also. This woman had a long journey and most peop;le had no sympathy for her. It was quite interesting the way the story intertwined myth and legend.
ReplyDeletei agree, although the grandmother was very old she was very strong willed. she was not giving up at all. her motivation and stamina were truly something to learn from.
ReplyDeleteI agree with aCantarini1129, there are definitely racial situations that take place. She had to face down a white hunter who pointed a gun at her, as well as he assumed that she was off to see Santa Claus because that's what 'blacks do'.
